She Stood Alone, Apart

Poem Posted January 5, 2007 by James E. Nelson

This sonnet is based on an incident I observed on the Plaza in Kansas City shortly before Christmas. It's an Advent Sonnet. Advent is long gone and Christmas will be done tomorrow with the Feast of Theophany/Epiphany (you know, the Twelve Days of Christmas, and all), so it's a bit behind the times, but it takes a while to write a sonnet.

SHE STOOD ALONE, APART

She stood alone, apart, yet in the crowd
that gathered at the entrance, and her hands
embraced her phone as if in prayer, head bowed
awaiting a familiar face, a friend.
Oh, her expectancy stood out from all
the festive folk awaiting nightfall: Lights
for Christmas, music, wassail, winter chill
outside the door, and friends made revelers bright.

Apologetic, her date arrived. He kissed
her anxious lips before they made their way
          into the restaurant and disappeared.
The revelry went on and no one missed
her hopeful patience by the door as they
          continued celebrating out the year.
