Graffiti

Essay Posted January 30, 2007 by James E. Nelson

Sioux City has had a recent outbreak of gang related graffiti. The newspaper has had stories about it for the last few weeks. A few days ago two or three people were arrested and the police department is of the opinion that the graffiti gang has been broken and the problem should now be solved.

That’s the newspaper story, but we at the Nelson household have the inside scoop.

Brenda was delivering meals over on the west side of town (the scene of the crime) a few weeks ago and saw some of the graffiti first hand. She said that (1) it certainly looked like the sort of gang graffiti we used to see on occasion down in Omaha, but (2) it was quite complex and there were even complete sentences painted on the sides of the building.

From this we can draw two conclusions.

First, the Sioux City police are exceedingly slow in responding to calls.

Second, Iowa still has a remarkable educational system, no doubt one of the best in the nation . . . Even our gang members can deface buildings in complete and grammatically correct sentences.
