Rain, Relatives, Beignets, but no Firearms

Posted April 28, 2007 by James E. Nelson

We’ve been on the road for a few days and there’s not too much to report.

ILLINOIS: Rain, more rain, mist, and rain.

ST LOUIS: The arch is till there.

CAPE GIRARDEAU: There’s a sign on the Pizza Inn door. You’re not allowed to bring your firearms into the restaurant.

MEMPHIS: It was good to see Charity. There’s a rumor that Shaun (the traveling salesman) actually passes through town on occasion. We cannot confirm the rumor.

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI: Both Jeff and Elizabeth were in town. Banner day.

MISSISSIPPI: Warning, the picture below this paragraph is a picture that might gross out everyone who isn’t a sixth grader. Evidently Mississippi is just a line of tall trees on each side of the road and bugs flying around. And, as the spot on the windshield proves, black swallowtails aren’t black all the way through, they’re yellow just like their tiger swallowtail cousins.

LOUISIANA: The highway is amazing. Both I-55 and I-10 are miles and miles of causeway built over the water. Not quite as romantic as Venice, but amazing all the same. And, both Brenda and I are reminded just how much we love egrets. If we’re lucky, pictures of egrets and alligators will follow.

PICKUPS: I’ve heard about these things, but have never actually seen one in person. This is an International big rig (the tractor part of a standard 18 wheeler tractor trailer). It’s been modified a bit and turned into a pickup. Rumor has it that they can run over a Prius without even needing to drop a gear.

TOMORROW MORNING: By complete chance, the hotel we pulled into is two blocks from the Café du Monde the Original French Market Coffee Stand and the world famous home of beignets. If you don’t believe me, check out the entry in Wikipedia. (Although this isn’t the original store in the French Quarter, but the one in Metairie.) Sugar donuts (which is essentially what a beignet is) is not my favorite breakfast, but it’s in walking distance of the motel and we are in metro New Orleans, so it is our bounden duty to have coffee and beignets for breakfast tomorrow.

NEXT WEEK: We begin our house building project. My hunch is I won’t have internet service for the week, but who knows.
