IOCC's "Volunteer in the Gulf Coast"

April 29 - May 5, Jim and Brenda Nelson

Photo Journal, Page 3

We didn't just work, work, work. We had fun during the week too.

Brenda Under Palm Tree French Quarter
Us northerners think that palm trees of all varieties are so cool. I can't believe I spent an afternoon driving around the French Quarter! And all I got for my efforts was a $20 parking ticket.
The team with Chef Billy

On Tuesday night St Timothy church invited us to a community meal at the East Campus where we were staying. There was no agenda for the meal (no meetings afterward, no evangelism push, etc.) it was just an opportunity for the folks to get together. While visiting with the folks they invited us to another meal at their other church. That seemed better than cooking, and that was an excellent meal. Chef Billy, pictured with us, cooks and coordinates two meals a week at the two compuses. He was great fun to talk to also.

Cemetery 1 Cemetery 2
Chef Billy's sister (I apologize to her, but I forget her name), told us how to get to one of the cemeteries in town. After dinner at St Timothy, we we went into New Orleans and explored the cemetery.
Rips Restaurant House on Stilts
On Wednesday we ate lunch at Rips, a great restaurant right on Lake Pontchartrain. We weren't dressed for the place, but they were kind to us nonetheless, and let us sit on the veranda rather than the servant's quarters. This is a house that has been put on stilts since Hurricane Katrina. It's just a few doors from Rips.
Phoenix Bigler Boston Street Restaurant
On Wednesday night, Ben, our Habitat site supervisor, and his wife Kim, invited us over for dinner. I am sorry to say I never got a picture of Kim. This is a picture of their son, Phoenix, in Jeff's arms. On Friday we had a celebration at the Boston Street Food & Spirits. Great fun was had by all.
Restaurant table at night Crazy for Flooring
This picture really doesn't have much to do with anything. It is a photo of our table at Boston Street just before we left. I think it's cool. On Sunday night (after we all went our separate ways) Brenda and I stayed in a motel that had a bad floor in the bathroom. We couldn't help ourselves and put down some flooring in order to make the place look better. (wink, wink)
