Blog Post: Primary Returns from Wyoming

Essay Posted January 16, 2008 by James E. Nelson

I'm very surprised that the talking heads aren't talking more about the Wyoming primary, which was Tuesday (the same day as the Michigan primary). In many ways it's a bellweather state, so it's worth paying attention to.

Wyoming is only two or three stoplights to the west of our house, so I've got great information on what's going on out west.

First, the antelope and rattlesnakes voted overwhelmingly for Mitt Romney, largely because he never made an appearance in the state, and antelope and rattlesnakes like it that way. The deer tended to vote for Fred Thompson. Word is that he looked very familiar to them. I suspect it's the "deer in the headlights" look that he's had during the last few weeks.

On the Democratic side, the cows voted overwhelmingly for Hillary. One of my sources in Wyoming reports that after the fabulous Cattle Futures trade the Clintons pulled off back in the 80s. The cows evidently think that they are prophets, first-class seers. They're pretty sure the Clintons can see the future for cattle, and the cows see that as a good thing.

Although, the overwhelming cow support for Hillary in Wyoming may not translate to equivalent support among dairy cows in California. The California dairy cows, while happy, are pretty flaky and overly concerned about image. Chances are they will support John Edwards, mostly because of his great hair.

So that's the latest encouraging word from Wyoming.
